PEORIA, Ill. -- Business is flying at a record pace at Peoria's General Wayne A. Downing International Airport.

More than 56,000 passengers departed from and arrived at the airport in March. That number breaks the all-time monthly record.

Director of Airports Gene Olson said spring break, coupled with direct flights to Punta Gorda, Florida and Atlanta, Georgia contributed to the increase.

He hopes the record will solidify the gains made last year and "Hopefully also give us a stepping stone to branch out to get new cities, new destinations," said Olson. "The aviation industry is always changing and it gives us another opportunity to look and see what's out there."

Airport officials hope to announce the firm who will design the new control tower at the end of the month.

Entrance road reconstruction, which added more than 100 new parking spaces, is almost complete.
