CHILLICOTHE, Ill. -- The city of Chillicothe could be closer to reinstating Rescue 33 after the volunteer fire department was put on probation last August.
The city council voted unanimously Monday night to regulate its own ambulance service.
The state suspended Rescue 33 last year, citing various violations including a lagging response time and lack of staff.
Rescue 33 President Ron Hedden said a plan is in place to hopefully resurrect the service of a volunteer fire department.
Hedden said the changes could include, "a full-paid staff, twenty-four, seven. Two people at the ambulance garage, sitting in the ambulance, waiting for a call. So that does give a faster response to every area that we cover."
Since Rescue 33's suspension, Peoria-based Advanced Medical Transport has been servicing Chillicothe.
If the council supports Rescue 33, Hedden said local service could return in as early as 30 days.
