PEORIA, Ill. -- Residents and business owners near the Main and University Intersection had one last chance to have their voices heard before a reconstruction project begins.
Neighbors worry of increased traffic in neighborhoods during construction.
They also worry reducing university from four lanes to two will cause major traffic jams.
City Engineer Scott Reeise said the goal of the project is to make the area a more pedestrian friendly zone.
"Part of the goal is to slow traffic down," said Reeise. "Some people might call it congestion but our goal is to slow traffic down in order to increase the pedestrian safety. So we are trying to look at it more than just the car is the only way to get around. We are seeing more and more people walk."
Reeise hopes drivers will use alternate routes, like Interstate I-74.
Construction on Main and University is expected to finish by mid May.
