PEKIN, Ill. -- A retail store will not be sitting on Pekin's West Campus, at least for now.
The development company, RSBR Investments, wants to move Dollar General to the site of the old Pekin High School on the corner of Broadway and 9th Streets.
In order for that to happen, the land must be rezoned from "single-family residential" to "general business district".
Wednesday night, the Pekin Planning Commission voted against the request.
"After talking to several residents, nobody is in favor of this store going there," said Pekin Councilman, John Abel. "They are not against the business by any means. We all shop there. People just don't think it belongs on West Campus property."
"I would like to see it as a mixed-use site, said Pekin resident," Dale Noyse. "We could get some green space in there. Maybe Dollar General can fit in there somewhere, but it needs to have some green space. It's big enough for bike trails, hiking trails, and some landscaping. There are lots of things that can happen."
The decision will be recommended to the Pekin City Council.
The council will vote July 14.
