ROANOKE, Ill. -- A contaminated creek near Roanoke in Woodford County is almost clean after hog manure drained into it from a farm field.
A concerned citizen noticed several dead fish and a strange smell in the creek last Friday.
He notified Roanoke city officials Sunday evening, after the smell from the creek became unbearable.
Woodford County emergency management director and his crews worked quickly to discover the source of the smell.
Officials said they discovered a local farmer was improperly spraying his fields.
"They had gullies of this, large gullies of it built up and it all drained right into the creek,” said Roanoke Mayor Bob Isaia.
The mayor said no water supplies were contaminated. Residents are being asked to avoid the creek for at least the next few days.
