PEORIA Ill -- Based on reports from the AHL and NHL, the Peoria Rivermen could be gone after this season.

Their parent club, the St. Louis Blues, may be selling the team to the Vancouver Canucks.

Meanwhile, published reports say Peoria's minor league baseball team is facing financial troubles in paying off its stadium debt.

The Peoria Chiefs, currently affiliated with the St. Louis Cardinals, are looking for help in paying off more than $4 million on its ballpark mortgage.

City officials are hoping the large community support will keep both teams in Peoria.

"You hate to lose a professional sports franchise. I'm hoping that we won't," said Peoria Mayor, Jim Ardis. "I'm hoping that the community will make a strong case for both of the ownerships to keep their teams here."

"We have over 5,000 people per night coming to the stands and many of those sporting events we have, so it's important to continue to show that support," said Peoria City Manager, Patrick Urich.

Blues officials said nothing is final yet, but they have not denied the rumors about the Rivermen.
