ILLINOIS -- Illinois Treasurer and GOP candidate for Governor Dan Rutherford says his office has launched an independent investigation into allegations made against him by an employee.
Rutherford said their was no truth to the allegations.
Rutherford says the employee is represented by lawyer Christine Svenson, who, according to Rutherford, demanded 300-thousand dollars for the employee to 'walk away and keep it under wraps.'"
Further, the Treasurer ties opponent Bruce Rauner to that offer.
"Someone tried to get $300,000 and is being represented by an attorney that was on Bruce Rauner's payroll," said Rutherford.
Bruce Rauner said his campaign did hire Svenson to review a lease last Spring, but had nothing to do any allegations against Rutherford and he called on Rutherford to answer the claims against him by the employee, and not try to deflect attention with "ridiculous claims".
No one is saying exactly what the allegations are, but Christine Svenson is quoted as saying they are serious "first amendment issues".
