PEORIA, Ill. -- Beginning Saturday, local residents could be hearing bells and seeing red kettles throughout Central Illinois.
That means the Salvation Army's annual Tree of Lights campaign is underway.
The event raises money for the agency's annual Christmas programs and supports other services throughout the year.
Friday, the agency officially lit the Christmas tree at Northwoods Mall to kick off the event.
Lynn and Penny Kunkle are the honorary chairs for this years campaign.
"The thing about it is this year the needs have increased substantially. There's people that use to help the Salvation Army who are now getting some help from the army. And it's very hard on those people but the Salvation Army is there for everybody," said Lynn Kunkle.
This year, organizers hope to raise $1,670,000.
