CENTRAL ILLINOIS -- If you're still looking for a way to give this holiday season, don't wait. At least, that's what those at Salvation Army are saying.

Salvation Army in both Peoria and McLean Counties are asking you to spare some time.

Directors say more volunteers are needed at upcoming events and as red-kettle bell ringers.

In Peoria, fundraising for Tree of Lights campaign is at about 33 percent of the goal.

In McLean County, the organization is running behind on its red kettle campaign goal by about $40,000.

Captain Paul James says since more people have been donating to Hurricane Sandy victims, it's crucial to act immediately.

"We see a lot of the times that many people will donate later in the season," said Capt. James, "because it feels like Christmas and they're more generous at the time, but we really can't wait until that time. We're at that stage where we're kind of worried that we're a little bit further behind than we need to be."

The last day Salvation Army's red kettles will be out is Christmas Eve.

Other upcoming volunteer events include:

Saturday, December 8: "Fill the Truck" at both Peoria Walmarts, East Peoria and Washington are holding a one day toy/coat collection from 10:00 am - 4:00 pm.

Volunteers will hand out a wish list as shoppers enter the store. Volunteers are also needed to collect and count toys shoppers buy for the organization. Four to five volunteers are needed per hour.

Saturday, December 8: Coats for Kids Giveaway at Sylvia Fites Center (414 NE Jefferson, Peoria) from 9:00 am - 3:00 pm. Must bring ID and medical card.
