PEORIA, Ill. -- The Heartland Division of the Salvation Army has announced it honorary co-chairs for the 27th annual Tree of Lights Campaign.

Christopher and Julie Legacy will lead the campaign which begins November 8 and runs through the last week of January.

The Legacy's are active members of the central Illinois community, volunteering with Easter Seals, Big Brothers, Big Sisters, Crittenton Center, Junior Achievement and coaching youth sports.

The Tree of Lights Campaign raises about a third of the local annual budget for the Salvation Army.

This is the eighth year a couple has been selected to lead the campaign.

"I think the best thing that's happened out of having couples is they get their families involved, so it really becomes a family effort, whether it's kids or grandkids, they all get involved,” said Rick Draeger, Assistant Development Director, Salvation Army. “So it's not just the husband and wife but you'll see probably the Legacy's out with their kids ringing bells, a family atmosphere, which we think is neat because that's really who we're helping is families, that's where those dollars go."

Last year's Tree of Lights Campaign raised $1.6 million.

The Salvation Army is registering volunteers for the bell ringing/kettle drive, to sign up visit www.salvationarmy.org/heartland.
