PEORIA, Ill. -- A long time At-Large Peoria City Councilman says he is running for the First District Council seat next year because that area is vital to the city.
Gary Sandberg filed his petition for first district council just before the deadline Monday night.
Sandberg says he wants to represent the first district because of the importance the south side of Peoria holds for the city's future.
"For Peoria to really be a healthy city, we have to correct the deficiencies, the lack of investment here in the first district," said Sandberg. "The first district is what built the city of Peoria, the older areas of town and it's very easy to, you know, want to grow at the edges but we've got to regrow the center of the city and I feel that I'm the best person, the most experienced person to get that job done."
Sandberg believes it will be a spirited campaign.
He is running against Denise Moore and Randall Emert.
Incumbent Clyde Gulley is not running for re-election.
Sandberg says he planned to run for the seat even before Gulley chose not to seek another term.
