METAMORA,IL--Germantown Hills School District 69 was on soft lockdown for a second straight day after students discovered an intruder Monday. School administrators are trying to figure out how the man got inside the basement of the elementary school. Superintendent Dan Mair says three second-graders, participating in a math scavenger hunt, spotted the man in the basement near the furnace room. The two girls and a boy ran upstairs and notified staff, who contacted the Woodford County Sheriff's Department.
Mair says deputies searched the building, but did not find anything out of place. However, they did notice a door was not locked.
"We did find a basement door that was unsecured. It's a latch typed door, it wasn't fully so there's a possibility that the person may have exited through that door and possibly entered through it, that's what we're trying to investigate now."
Mair says there was an event at the elementary school on Saturday, but he's not sure when the man entered the building. Woodford County Sheriff's Department describes the suspect as a white male, about 25 to 30 years old, with dark curly hair and unshaven...between five feet seven and five-nine. He is wearing blue jeans, a red flannel shirt and black fleece jacket.
