AURORA, Ill. -- Senator Dick Durbin is calling for an expanded federal investigation after a deadly Interstate crash in northern Illinois.

On Monday, an alleged sleep-deprived truck driver caused the death of a tollway worker and critically injured an Illinois State Trooper.

DuPage County authorities said trucker Renato Velasquez had been on duty 38 hours with only 3.5 hours of sleep.

Velasquez is charged with four felonies and is currently out on $150,000 bond.

Senator Durbin's letter calls on the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration to determine if the driver or his employer violated rules limiting the number of hours a driver can be on the road and whether trucking companies routinely break safety laws and cause serious accidents.
