WASHINGTON D.C. -- Illinois now has both of its Senators back in Washington.
Republican Senator Mark Kirk has returned to work in Washington after suffering a stroke last year. On Wednesday, Kirk recounted his experience in Washington, saying he was very close to dying.
"And he came in and said you have just ruined my weekend. and the MRI showed that your carotid artery has dissected meaning that the lining had pulled away and he said your highly likely to have a stroke right now," said Kirk. "And so, he obviously had my full attention and luckily I was still in the hospital when it all hit."
The junior senator has gone through months of physical therapy to learn to walk and speak again, he has limited movement on left side and speaks more slowly. He will have a reduced schedule while serving in the Senate and uses a cane to walk.
