PEORIA, Ill -- Peoria County Sheriff Mike McCoy was honored Friday night but not for his work in law enforcement. McCoy was honored for his service to the community.
About 500 people game together to honor Sheriff McCoy with the Boy Scouts of America 'Citizen of the Year' award.
Scout executive George Clay said the award is about what he gives back to the community outside of his job as Sheriff.
McCoy is the co-founder of the St. Jude run and in 30 years has helped raise over $13 million for the kids of St. Jude.
"The St. Jude organization has been huge to me for a long time, since I was in grade school. To be a part of that and to be able to raise money and contribute time, effort and energy to something that shows great results is once again an honor," said Sheriff McCoy.
Past recipients include former mayor Jim Maloof and former Caterpillar CEO Jim Owens.
Friday night's event also raised about $350,000 for the Boy Scouts.
