PEORIA, Ill. -- The opening of Heddington Oaks Nursing Home has left Peoria County Board members wondering what to do with the old Belwood nursing home.

As the board looks at several possible options, including demolishing the building, Peoria County Sheriff Mike McCoy is strongly voicing his opinion.

He said the county jail, located right next door to Belwood, could definitely use the facility.

"We have a lot of good uses that we think we can do with it. Anywhere from laundry facilities to some cooking facilities. Our kitchen at the jail was built to serve about 650 meals a day. Now we're serving about 1,600 meals a day," said McCoy. "I think there are a lot of good uses for the county to save us some long term money before we start dividing it up and giving it to other entities."

The County Board is in no hurry to find a use for the vacant building. They said want to look through all of their options.
