FORT KNOX, Ky. -- The Fort Knox military post was briefly locked down and remains on heightened security after a shooting early Wednesday evening.

According to the base's spokesman, the shooting occurred shortly after 5 p.m. ET near the Army's Human Resource Command.

Officials say at least one civilian was flown to a nearby medical facility.

The civilian's condition remains unknown at this time.

The military base, which sprawls over 170 miles in three counties about 30 miles south of Louisville, Ky., is separate from but adjacent to the famous federal gold depository.
