JACKSON COUNTY, Ill. -- A state of emergency was declared Friday for a southern Illinois county as eight inches of snow fell in the far southern portion of the state.

In Jackson County Authorities said primary roads were treacherous and some secondary roads were impassable because of a combination of snow, sleet and ice.

Classes at Southern Illinois University were canceled because of the storm.

This frigid weather part of a system that's brought cold temperatures to much of the country from Oklahoma to New England.
