PEORIA, Ill.-- The process to build four athletic fields at Peoria High School is expected to be underway this summer.

At a special District 150 board meeting today ownership of the property was transferred to the Public Building commission.

The commission will be paying for the construction of the site.

When the lease agreement ends, ownership will be transferred back to district 150.

Peoria High School is the only high school in the area that does not have the ability to allow its athletes to practice and play games on its campus.

"We're just trying to have Peoria High kids have the same abilities and if you listen to the students this is just incredibly important. We just want all of the kids to have that same kind of opportunity pretty much everyone else around does,” said Dave Kinney, Interim Treasurer of the district 150 school board.

Bids will be taken towards the end of May and construction will start this summer.

Several roads around the area are expected to be closed during parts of the construction.
Parts of the project are expected to be ready for use by the Spring.
