PEORIA, Ill. -- There is a new spelling champion in Peoria.
Eighteen spellers ranging from fourth to eighth grade went round for round during Friday's annual Peoria Journal Star Spelling Bee.
After nine rounds, fifth grader Sydnee O'Donnell spelled "polymorphic" for the win.
The St. Philomena student says it takes a lot practice to come out victorious.
"It was pretty hard studying, but I spend a lot of time," O'Donnell said. "I want to thank my classmates and of course, my parents."
Second place went to home school student Katie Karl. This was her fourth year competing.
O'Donnell will be back in two weeks to compete in the grand spelling bee for a spot to go to Washington D.C. for the Scripps National Bee.
