BLOOMINGTON, Ill. -- Downtown Bloomington is "going red" for the month of February.
The American Heart Association lit up downtown Bloomington in all red to kick off American Heart month.
Officials hope the new street lights will help spread awareness for heart disease.
Heart disease is the leading cause of death in the United States and can be more fatal in women due to the differences in symptoms.
"We've formed our heart survivor group which is our heart ambassador for OSF, and we're just passionate about spreading the word so that women know our heart symptoms are so different," said heart disease survivor Ren Cochren.
"They're not exactly the same as men's heart symptoms. They get overlooked, they get ignored, and tragically women often wait until the last minute to get help. Perhaps, they wait a little too long," said Downtown Bloomington Association Executive Director Tricia Stiller.
As part of the city's effort to spread awareness, OSF Saint Joseph will host a "Red Dress Dash" on February 9.
