WASHINTON, Ill -- St. Patrick School in Washington celebrated a win of their own on Wednesday.
United States Department of Education representative Maureen Dowling visited St. Patrick's to present students and staff with the National Blue Ribbon Award.
The award recognizes schools that are exemplary or high performing.
Assistant principal Doreen Shipman says the school has put a focus on improving math and reading scores.
"We've done a lot with improving our math scores...our reading scores...we've really advanced our technology," Shipman said. "That was part of our school improvement goals. We placed in the top 15% of the nation on our Iowa test of basic skills in reading and math."
A formal presentation of the Blue Ribbon Award was held in Washington, DC on November 13.
St. Patrick's is one of three downstate schools to receive the prestigious honor.
