BLOOMINGTON, Ill. -- The state treasurer's race is picking up steam.

The Chicago State Representative and former Minority Leader, Tom Cross is running against political new comer, DuPage County Auditor Bob Grogan.

Cross wants to make the state legislature accountable for meeting the constitutional requirement of having a balanced budget each year, even if it means going to court.

When you don't pay your bills, human service agencies suffer, schools suffer, and hospitals suffer," said Cross. "We owe it to those people to have a balanced budget."

"None of that sort of lines up," said Grogan. "The treasurers job is about safety, soundness, and return. The treasurers office shouldn't be the attorney general's office with tracing wheels."

Grogan said if elected he would be the first certified public account to hold the treasurer's position.
