CENTRAL ILLINOIS -- Illinois State Police are reminding you to stay safe behind the wheel this Labor day weekend.

State troopers are out in full force patrolling the roadways.

They will be looking for impaired drivers, seat belt violations, speeding, and distracted driving.

Several roadside safety checks will also be set up around the area.

Police hope the safety precautions help cut down on the already high fatality count this year.

"This year we have 26 fatals already," said State Trooper Dustin Pierce. "Nine of those fatalities have come from motorcycles. During the entire year last year we only had 7 people killed on motorcycles. So that too will be a part of our focus for the Labor Day weekend."

State Troopers also want to remind you to pay attention to the posted signs in construction zones, even while work has stopped during the holiday.
