PEORIA, Ill. -- Democratic State Senator Mike Freichs is looking to take a new seat in Springfield as State Treasurer.

Senator Frerichs kicked off his campaign here in Peoria on Wednesday.

Frerichs said, if elected, keeping jobs in Illinois and managing college debts will be top priorities.

"I get to meet a lot of students who come to me and share their stories of the mounting debt their accumulating in college. That is a real break on the growth of our economy. We need to get college costs under control and make sure there is a funding source so students can come out and they can explore whatever dreams they have coming out of college," said Mike Frerichs, State Treasurer candidate.

Frerichs does not face anyone in the primary, but will be up against either Tom Cross or Bob Grogan in the general election.
