Students Walk to Benefit Haiti

May 27, 2011 Updated May 27, 2011 at 9:36 PM CDT

The students of Calvin Coolidge Middle School held a walk-a-thon Friday to raise money for children in Haiti.

The yearly event is in memory of Suzi Russell, a former teacher at Coolidge who died of cancer 15 years ago.

Each year's event benefits a different cause.

Hedy Elliot, the teacher who organizes the event says it's about giving to those who are in need and teaching children a valuable lesson.

Elliot says, "I tell them as a history teacher, that's what I hope they take away, to be a good community member. I think that's what is most important."

The students raised $1,300 for Haitian Hearts, surpassing their goal of $750.
