PEORIA, Ill. -- A fourth grade teacher at Peoria's Charter Oak Primary School has left quite an impression on one of her students.

Ten year-old Spencer Raw wrote about teacher Stacy Negley's class and entered it in the "My Favorite Teacher" essay contest sponsored by Barnes and Noble.

On Wednesday Spencer learned his essay was selected as the winning entry from the Peoria area. and Negley was recognized with a certificate.

It was a big surprise for her, not to mention very gratifying.

"Teaching is not an easy profession and there are stresses just like any other job," said Negley, "but knowing that you've reached one student in particular makes everything worth it and it's the reason I became a teacher."

"I just thought that she would be really surprised so I decided to write it," Spencer explained. "Her class just feels a lot like home."

After winning the local competition Spencer Raw's essay is now eligible to be considered for a national prize.
