DELAVAN, Ill. -- Students at Delavan Grade School took part in "International Walk to School Day” Wednesday morning.
In Delavan, volunteers with Fed Ex and the Safe Kids Peoria Area Coalition stepped up efforts to make sure students arrived at school safely.
The volunteers helped to identify unsafe intersections, streets needing sidewalks and dangerous areas where pedestrians have either been hit or nearly hit by a vehicle.
"It's important to educate students and children on proper safety techniques, because it's up to us we are our children's advocates and it's important for them to understand that sometimes cars are not looking for us,” said Jamie Sammis of the Children's Hospital of Illinois. “Cars are constantly distracted these days with cell phones and radio and eating, so you know it's important for these kids to understand that we need to be our own advocates and protect ourselves.”
To aid with safety efforts, Delavan Grade School received a grant that allowed the school to make improvements to the parking lot.
