PEORIA, Ill. -- Police urge residents to remember these are crimes of opportunity, with no signs of forced entry, so it is important for residents to take precautions to protect themselves.

Friday, Peoria police officer Ryan Winkle showed off his fortress of a home.

Winkle has a home alarm system, outdoor motion lights, bars on some of his windows, and a live monitor of his outdoor cameras.

But Winkle says you don't have to go all out like he did to secure your home.

"You don't have to spend a ton of money to get a good security system. You can pay somebody to come out and install a system and you pay like a monthly subscription to have that service," said Peoria Police Department Officer Ryan Winkle.

Winkle says do-it-yourself kits are also available and usually only cost a couple hundred dollars.
