The Red Cross opens shelters for flood evacuees

PEORIA, Ill. -- The Red Cross is offering assistance to those evacuating flooded areas by opening five different shelters in central Illinois.

Supplies, including cots, blankets, food, water and hygiene items were delivered to the shelters last night in preparation for the rising waters.

Shelter locations are as follows:
Oglesby (LaSalle County) - Illinois Valley College, 815 N. Orlando Smith Ave.
Roanoke (Woodford County) - Trinity Lutheran Church, 202 W. Lincoln
Peoria (Peoria County) - Redeemer Lutheran Church, 6801 N. Allen Rd
Ottawa (LaSalle County) - a city-run shelter, Shepherd Middle School
Canton (Fulton County) - St. Mary's Gym, 357 N. 3rd Street

MOVED TO STANDBY:
Hanna City (Peoria County) - Hanna City United Methodist Church on Route 116
Kickapoo (Peoria County) - Kickapoo Township Hall on Route 150

CLOSED:
Georgetown (Vermilion County) - First Church of Christ
Homer (Champaign County) Homer Village Hall

In addition, the Red Cross has been serving meals to sandbaggers working against the floods.

Those in need of shelter assistance as well as those who wish to volunteer for the relief effort should contact their local chapter office at the number below.

The Red Coss is asking also for assistance in the form of donation to aid in their flood relief efforts. Donations can be made by visiting www.redcross.org/donate or by calling 1-800-RED-CROSS.
