PEORIA, Ill. -- Drunk driving is to blame for a crash that sent three people to the hospital Wednesday night.

Police said driver Paul Smith of Pekin was traveling northbound on the Maxwell Road extension ramp to westbound Interstate-474 when his car left the road just before 10 p.m.

The car traveled about 50 feet into a heavily wooded area and hit several trees.

Smith and two passengers were taken to an area hospital.

Police said Smith was driving too fast for conditions and had open alcohol inside his car.

He is charged with driving under the influence, illegal transport of alcohol and failure to reduce speed to avoid a crash.
