ILLINOIS -- Pets can now travel on Amtrak, with a few exceptions.

Amtrak said its test-piloting a program to allow dogs or cats under 20 pounds to ride the train.

Much like taking a pet onto a plane, the animal will have to be in a carrier and placed underneath the owner's seat.

Right now, pets will only be able to ride on trains traveling between Quincy and Chicago.

But Amtrak says if the test goes well, it could allow pets on more trains in the future.

Tickets for a pet cost $25
