Tuition at U of I to increase by 1.7 percent, smallest percentage in decade

CHICAGO, Ill. -- The University of Illinois will see its smallest Tuition increase in over a decade due a proposal that was approved Thursday byBoard of Trustees in Chicago.

The four-year tuition for incoming freshman will only increase by the rate of inflation, which is about 1.7 percent. Last year's tuition rate for incoming students was an average of a 4.8 percent increase.

In dollars, the proposal increases tuition by less than $200 a year on each of the University's three campuses.

This increase will be the smallest since the 2000-2001 school year in Champaign-Urbana and Chicago and the smallest since 2001-2002 in Springfield.

Under the proposal, base tuition for in-state students will increase $198 to $11,834 a year in Champaign-Urbana, $174 to $10,406 in Chicago, and $157.50 to $9,247.50 in Springfield.
