GLASFORD TOWNSHIP, Ill -- Two men are dead after a fatal crash on Route 24 and Banner Marsh Road.

The Peoria County Coroner says both males were passengers in a SUV that was struck and crushed by a garbage truck.

The accident happened around 4 p.m. Tuesday.

Illinois State Police report that the driver of the SUV failed to yield when turning left.

The driver turned directly into the path of the garbage truck traveling Eastbound.

Coroner Johnna Ingersoll says the two passengers in the SUV were pronounced dead at the scene.

The driver was transported to OSF Saint Francis Medical Center with life threatening injuries.

"It is of course unnerving to see such a tragic crash, extensive damage do the vehicle's disproportionate size," says Ingersoll.

State Police report the driver of the garbage truck was not injured.

The driver of the SUV was issued citations for failure to yield and an expired license.

The identities of the two passengers are being withheld pending notification of families.
