Trial of Phouvone Sophanavong to be held in Tazewell County

PEKIN, Ill. -- Tazewell County State's Attorney's Office is determining the appropriate charges against Peoria Resident Phouvone Sophanavong.

Sophanavong is the suspect for the murder of 28-year-old Laongdao Phangthong whose body was found in her car at a parking deck at OSF Saint Francis Medical Center earlier this month. Investigators believe it may be 1st degree murder implying premeditated intent to kill.

Officials could not comment on any further details of the investigation in order to protect the integrity and fairness of the trial. However, after discussing several possible locations, including Peoria County, officials have deemed Tazewell County the most appropriate place to hold the trial.

""We know that Peoria County and Tazewell County each have limited resources," said Tazewell County State's Attorney, Stewart Umholtz. "So we worked together to try to determine the best possible way to proceed with this prosecution... 'Where is the evidence?' 'Where are the witnesses located?' 'Where is it most convenient?' And we're concerned about having a fair trial, and we will do that. We both agree it should be in Tazewell County.

This post will be updated as the investigation continues.
