PEORIA, Ill. -- A local air force veteran is honored for his service, more than three decades later.
On Monday, Congressman Aaron Schock presented Benny Percy with a ribbon and two honorary medals.
The medals signify Percy's dedication to the Air Force, a lot of which was kept secret, such as his involvement in Operation Eagle Claw.
That was the mission that attempted to rescue 52 Americans held hostage in Iran in April of 1980, during the Carter administration.
That, along with other classified information, has been released, allowing Percy to receive these medals honoring his dedication and service.
"I was honored to serve in the military and any veteran out there that needs assistance on a veteran matter, should talk to their congressman or his office and get the assistance they need," Percy said.
Percy served in the Air Force from 1977 to 1981 when he was honorably discharged.
