PEORIA, Ill. -- A veteran's memorial was re-dedicated today in honor of a local hero.

Veteran's Memorial Park in Downtown Peoria was renamed after General John Shalikashvili for his service.

Shalikashvili dedicated the park as Veteran's Memorial Park twenty years ago.

The Peorian General served as Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff and NATO Supreme Allied Commander in the 90's.

"I don't think we give them enough honor and tribute. It is really important to remember them. This is one way to remember the General in a special way," said central Illinois landmarks foundation president William Ordaz.

The Veterans Memorial park is free and open to the public.
