PEORIA, Ill. -- The Greater Peoria Honor Flight is taking off Tuesday for Washington, D.C.

The veterans will be leaving in the morning from the Wayne A. Downing International Airport.

Once the veterans arrive in Washington, they will get an up-close look of several memorials.

"I can't think of any better way to say thank you to those who served our country,” said Lesley Matuszak, co-founder of Greater Peoria Honor Flight. “For us to be able to walk freely in this land and speak freely, we owe such a deep gratitude to these men and women."

There is a "Welcome Home" celebration Tuesday night as soon as the veterans land at the airport.

Organizers say they should be home between 9 p.m. and 10 p.m. Tuesday night.
