PEORIA, Ill. -- All summer motorists driving through downtown Peoria have endured one obstacle after another while road improvements take shape in the warehouse district.

The first big step of improving the district's infrastructure is nearly complete. Illinois American Water expects to finish installing 6,900 feet of new water mains and 20 fire hydrants by next week.

"You're looking at an area where you're going to want growth, businesses and residents to move to, you're going to need fire safety, you're going to need reliable water service, that's what we're celebrating," said Illinois American Water Spokesperson Karen Cotton.

Cotton said the project cost Illinois American Water $1.9 million. The new fire hydrants were installed in the areas around Washington Street and Adams Street.
