PEORIA, Ill. -- Area police are warning drivers of a common cold weather practice that may be putting you at risk.
Peoria Police said every winter there is an increase in vehicle thefts due to people leaving their cars unattended while they warm them up.
Over the weekend, two Peoria residents reported their cars stolen. Both were left running.
Illinois Vehicle Code states you cannot leave a car unattended without shutting off the engine, locking the ignition and removing the keys.
Motorists in violation of this law could face a $120 fine.
