WASHINGTON, Ill -- A Washington family is picking up the pieces after a house fire Friday morning.

A homeowner said she came home to find her house in flames.

The initial call came in around 8:00 Friday morning that the home at 906 Bayberry Drive was fully engulfed.

However, when crews arrived they only found the kitchen area on fire.

There is extensive fire damage in the kitchen and smoke damage throughout the house.

"From the exterior I found a chair and a it looked like a countertop that was on fire, but there was a lot of fire in the building," said Washington Fire Chief Mike Vaughn.

Chief Vaughn said several area fire departments responded for back-up. He says given initial call and the time of day they figured the all-volunteer department could use the help.

The fire remains under investigation.
