EUREKA, Ill. -- A captain with the Woodford County Sheriff's Office is tossing his hat into the pool for Sheriff.

Captain Matt Smith announced his candidacy on Wednesday. Sheriff Jim Pierceall announced earlier this month that he will not seek re-election next year.

Captain Smith has been working at the sheriff's office for more than 25 years.

"There are so many people that have a job and don't enjoy their job,” Smith said. “I always enjoyed serving the public in Woodford County."

If elected, Smith said he will look at improving technology usage within the department.
