YGE: The return of Jimbo's Jumbos

PEKIN, Ill -- The yellow circle surrounded by lights along 8th Street in Pekin is back with a vengeance.

"It was closed two years too long," says long-tim customer Ross Bohanon. "They should have been open, because they make a good sandwich. A really good sandwich."

Tracy and Dan Lohman reopened Jimbo's Jumbos on July 2nd.

Although it's their first time operating a business, customers say they've already perfected the original recipe of the long-lasting sandwich stand.

Finding the recipe was no real secret. They've simply been working under the guidance of previous owners to maintain that signature sub sandwich taste.

"They were the second owners after Jim Schneider," Tracy tells us, "and so they trained directly with Jim and now they're training us."

Seating is limited since most of their business is carry-out or delivery.

So photographer Josh Simon and I took advantage of the breezy day beneath one of the outdoor umbrellas.

Josh went with their most popular Italian Steak Sandwich, loaded with onions, mushrooms, marinara and your choice of just about any vegetable you can think of.

I chose the Sausage and Steak Sandwich, which is a lot like the Italian Steak, but with sausage.

You have a choice of American or provolone cheese, and I would recommend the provolone for an Italian sub.

Anybody who's eaten at Jimbo's Jumbos will tell you these sandwiches are better than any chain restaurant you'll find on the way here or back.

A pair of sandwiches with drinks and cookies came to $17.60 plus tip.

Jimbo's Jumbos is located at 1007 North 8th Street in Pekin.

They are open Monday through Saturday from 11 AM to 10 PM.
