EAST PEORIA, Ill. -- The Harvesting Dreams program at Illinois Central College held its annual year-end celebration Friday.

The program first began at ICC in 2009 and is designed to mentor African-American male students, help develop leadership skills and encourage them to pursue their degree.

According to its program assistant, Morri Douglas, the initiative has increased retention rates significantly.

"We have out-paced the college, for all students, by 20-percent," Douglas said. "I mean we're in the ballpark of 79-percent of our students are retained or graduate."

There are about 60 students currently enrolled at ICC who participate in the Harvesting Dreams program.
