You Gotta Eat: Weber's Weenies

BLOOMINGTON, Ill. -- For the past year, there has been something very “New York” about the square in downtown Bloomington.

On this week's You Gotta Eat, we take you to a one of a kind hot dog stand with some of the best weenies around.

Weber's Weenies has gained a strong customer base that keeps returning for whatever it is that makes these hot dogs such a hot item.

"We'll keep that to ourselves, but we keep them smoked and we keep them in our natural casing so they can have that pop,” said Owner, Zach Weber.

Zach and his wife Shauna started the small business to be at home more with their daughter Lucy. The 5 year old was diagnosed with cancer three years ago and has become a bit of a celebrity in the area.

Now cancer free, Lucy will be co-hosting the St. Jude telethon this Saturday.

When she visits her dad at work, she too tries to figure out what makes these dogs better than most others.

"I don't know, they just are,” said Lucy Weber. “Probably because Daddy makes them."

The old-fashioned feel of the cart often attracts return customers who have seen Weber's Weenies parked at another location on Washington Street.

"It was awesome. It was great, and I seen him while I'm on lunch at work and I wanted more so here I am,” said return customer Alesha Love

Anna Yee kept things on the lighter side with a beef hot dog with mustard and a black berry soda. Joe Bennett had the beef and cheddar dog on a poppy seed bun with ketchup, mustard and onions.

They both agree this is not your ordinary hot dog.

The meat comes from a local farmer and you can tell by the taste. There's a crispness that you won't find from your average vendor. In short, this is a darned good dog.

For two lunch specials, which include a hot dog, side and drink, they paid $10 even.

"The dogs are smoked and they're made just for us. It's not something you can get at the ballpark or anywhere else,” said Zach Weber.

Weber's Weenies is stationed at Jefferson and Main in downtown Bloomington from 11 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Tuesdays through Fridays.
