CENTRAL ILLINOIS -- Illinois State and local police are cracking down on impaired drivers over the holiday, and the next couple of weekends.
Hundreds of seat belt and roadside safety checks will be aimed at keeping drunk drivers off the roads.
If drivers appear under the influence of drugs or alcohol or their Blood Alcohol Content is above the legal limit, licenses will be suspended.
That also goes for anyone who refuses to take a sobriety test.
"One driving fatality is one too many for the families and for the police," said Trooper Dustin Pierce, of IL State Police District 8. "Our goal is to implement enforcement efforts which will result in fewer crashes so that we drive zero fatalities to a reality."
Those convicted of DUI can also face jail time and fines of up to $25,000.
The holiday crackdown is sponsored by the Illinois Department of Transportation and more than 250 law enforcement agencies statewide.
