PEORIA Ill -- Area youth got some valuable life lessons from Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority Saturday.
It's part of their 16th annual Youth Symposium.
Students in grades 7-12 worked together in groups to engineer the most efficient parachute.
Organizers say the event gives young people the life skills they will need when entering the real world.
"I think it is important to grab the youth in the community and teach them some things in a way they will want to learn," said Youth Symposium Coordinator, Cheryl Ellis. "If they are having fun, if they are engaged, and if we give them something to eat, then it is a good Saturday for them. We appreciate all of them out because they could have just been at home in bed or doing something else."
The parachute exercise was presented by the National Society of Black engineers.
The event also included discussions on healthy life choices.
