SPRINGFIELD, Ill. -- Analysis of samples taken at the Byron Nuclear Power Plant showed the facility did not leak measurable radiation after a power failure earlier this week.
Illinois Emergency Management Agency Director Jonathon Monken said the results are good news for the surrounding community.
"Our laboratory results confirm that the steam release at the Byron Nuclear Power Plant on Monday presented no health hazard for people who live and work in the area," said Monken.
Water and vegetation samples were taken from several areas surrounding the nuclear power plant.
Results show those samples contained mere traces of tritium, a radioactive isotope that is naturally occurring and produced during the operation of nuclear power plants.
The IEMA said levels of tritium in those samples were too small to be a concern and fall way below the maximum contaminant level.
