PEORIA Ill -- Dozens of families walked the Peoria Riverfront Saturday morning to remember and give thanks to the Children's Hospital of Illinois.

It was part of the Seventh Annual Small Wonders Miracle Walk.

Every year, hundreds of critically ill newborns are cared for in the Hospital's Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU).

Saturday was an opportunity for families to pay back the unit by participating in a 3-K walk.

"Most people that are here today have been affected by the NICU in some way," said walk chairperson, Lisa Smith. "Whether they are an NICU graduate themselves, or they are parents, families, and friends, it is all just kind of a support network. We are raising money to support patient and family-centered care up in the NICU."

More than 500 people registered for the walk this year.

Organizers are hoping to raise more than $30,000 from the event.
