WASHINGTON, D.C. -- The dome on the U.S. capitol building is getting a face lift.

However, it's not just getting cosmetic work. According to the architect of the capitol, the iconic dome has more than a thousand cracks and deficiencies.

This dome is not an original part of the capitol building. It replaced the original dome in 1866 at a cost of just over one-million dollars.

The two-year restoration project is estimated to cost more than $59-million.

The dome has not undergone a complete restoration since 1960.

Get your photos now. Starting in November the capitol dome will be scaffolded for two years.
